THE CZECHS AND A SNAKE IN THE GRASS FROM BRUSSELS.
The writer is indebted to Peter Hitchens' article in the MoS (8/2/09), an indepth discourse on the Czech position towards the EU. Students of history will be aware of the country's short history since being freed from the Austro-Hungarian empire following WWI, through the majority of the 20th. century until 1989. Most of this time living under dictatorships from foreign countries. Even under those vile oppressive regimes there was always a hope of a return to self determination. This they hoped would be easy, clasped to the bosom of the European Project. Fortunately for them, some of the older, wiser politicians are tossing up cautionary flares; Although the Republic currently holds the rotating EU presidency, The Czech President, Vaclav Klaus won't even have the EU flag flying over the most official of their country's buildings. They are naturally afraid of being steamrollered by unelected beaurocrats from HQ. Brussels have sent a 'hit man' to visit upon Klaus and threaten him that he must sign up to the Lisbon Treaty, or as the Irish see it, The Constitution. Enter the snake: Cohn-Bendit, former red anarchist, anti Gaullist, whose platform was the freedom to enter female accommodation at college/university. A red in your bed rather than under it. This was front line danger at it's deadliest. Meanwhile his contemporary, Vaclav Klaus, has always fought against real oppression. Cohn-Bendit now flies under a flag of convenience, the Green Party. If he were not Jewish we could envisage a kind of Christmas decoration. The Czechs have, we suspect, been hoping that the UK would ride to it's rescue, backing it's democratic longing.
