THE MAYOR OF DONCASTER(BRIDGE).
At last, the voting public is stirring. Peter Davies, the recently appointed Mayor of the South Yorkshire town of Doncaster, well known for favouring any socialist regime opted for an English Democrat. Be aware you Tories, the fringe parties are on the march.
The appointment is well received in these pages as he seems to be on course for what we have been advocating from the outset, greater democracy. A Magna Charta moment; listening to the people rather than Brussels.
It's heart warming that, in some corners of Britain, the electorate want rid of the system designed as a massive job creation scheme. Within weeks, said Mayor has severed links with around five twinned cities/towns, explaining that free trips for council staff to these destinations has to stop, unless the taxpayer can also have similar perks. No more funding for Gay Pride occasions, this being a minority funded by the majority, all sections have to be funded equally. We can add to the hit list, posts that we would call 'jobsworths'. He also points to the fact that Gypsies have more rights than the indigenous population.
Mr. Davies makes comparisons with, for example, Philadelphia, USA, population: 1.2 million, has only 17 councillors. He therefore wishes to reduce Doncaster's by approximately two thirds. This is dynamite!
We understand that, in doing these things, he has cut his salary from £73,000 to £30,000 and got rid of his official car, as he is happy travelling on public transport, where presumably, he is nearer to the people and their feelings. This man is a breath of fresh air.
