UKIP IS COMING, UKIP IS COMING!

In the last week, England and Wales have been to the polls for the County Council elections. The usual protest from the dim left regarding the standard of living, which is getting lower due to their disastrous years in office. However, we have a robust political party making considerable headway, The United Kingdom Independence Party, although it would appear that local elections are a strange place for a party resolved to getting Britain out of the European Union; nevertheless, under the inspired leadership of Nigel Farage, a formidable performer in the Brussels Parliament, see Youtube. They are offering proper conservative policies. Apart from our independence from Europe, they would bring back Grammar Schools; create a flat rate regarding income tax, and distance us from  the Human Rights Rulings. Such things obviously struck a chord in these local polls.

Naturally, there is always a downside on these occasions, as Labour won the overall control of our local county, Nottinghamshire. We have had a very efficient Conservative Council led by the excellent Kay Cutts, a type of Margaret Thatcher, holding down local taxes, and demanding central government to improve a major arterial road to serve Nottingham. We can only assume that most locals want a return to increased taxes, not overlooking possible financial assistance for Nottingham City Council and the loss-making tram network. Such funding was thrown out of court by Kay Cutts. As she rightly pointed out, the people in the north of the county would be subscribing to something that they would not use.

The other success for the left was the return of a Labour regime in Derbyshire, which was acknowledged by the local BBC station by asking the new Leader of the council what she had in mind, to which her reply was that her first act would be to ensure that all council employees would receive a 'living wage', current Labour jargon, so as to be able to circulate more money in the local economy; as expected, the simpering reporter never thought of asking from where they would acquire this money. Bring back Alan Whicker.

NEXT FIXTURE: EURO ELECTIONS 2014.
