COULD THE PROBLEM BE QUOTAS.
The United Kingdom is going through a period of introspection. This was triggered by the revelations of Jimmy Savile, a Disc Jockey, Charity Fund raiser, and paedophile; much of the latter going on within the British Broadcasting Corporation, and indeed such activities were known to some of the management. This has lead to a spate of arrests by the police, which have already resulted in a number of prison sentences.
The most recent high profile trial was for a character from one of the commercial channels, ITV, Michael Le Vell (Turner). Le Vell's accuser was a young female, claiming to have been sexually abused by him for many years. The jury, however, didn't believe her story and Le Vell was acquitted. The author has no opinion on the foregone matter, apart from the fact that, from what we read, there was disagreement in the state institution which makes the decisions on whether or not to proceed with charges, which culminate in the trial of the accused. Nazir Afzal, Chief Crown Prosecutor for the North West, was against proceeding, whereas Alison Levitt QC, principal legal adviser to the Director of Public Prosecutions, was determined to go through with the trial. From the reports, there was little or no evidence to convict Le Vell; it was his word against his accuser.
This brings us to the point of this posting: How did this neophyte of a Queen's Council get to the exulted position of advising the Director of the CPS? I'm tempted to say that she would be better off being a mother at home, but heaven knows how her children would turn out. Her judgement appears to be on the same low level as the senior Metropolitan Police Officer, Cressida Dick, who, a few years ago, gave the order to kill an innocent Brazilian electrician living in Streatham, South London. This, nevertheless, has not held her back, as she rockets up the ladder of seniority at Scotland Yard; which would suggest that quotas are not good for everyone's health. In addition, be assured, all these ill thought out decisions add to the bill of taxpayer GB.
AS FOR MICHAEL LE VELL, AS A SELF CONFESSED ALCOHOLIC, DECLARING THAT YOU WERE ABOUT TO CELEBRATE WITH A DRINK, WAS NOT A SMART MOVE.
