THE 400 CLUB.
It is now three years since this blog commenced, during which time the observations have been directed at political decisions, most of them pretty dim. Perhaps a resume` is in order.
It is appropriate that we start by looking at the financial situation, which happens to be in a deplorable state. Why should that be the case? Easy; the last Government, under 'Incapability Brown', ran up the National Debt to a mind boggling £4.8 trillion. As a nation, we cannot consider that to be acceptable, because our creditors won't allow it. In principle, we are back to the situation when Dennis Healey was Chancellor of the Exchequer, which compels the present Coalition Government, with the International Monetary Fund looking over it's shoulder, to make all the right moves, particularly in the savings department. Let us get interest rates up, to bring the property market back where it should be, possibly around half the 2007 valuations. What is the obsession with consumerism, considering that most articles are manufactured abroad? We can then consider the waste of money spent on the European Union and, finally, the projected public sector pensions.
Health is another area where we have to look closely at the outgoings. It is not alright to assume that we just keep spending money that doesn't exist, purely for political expediency. The NHS is a vast ocean of expenditure, and like any economy can find savings; the Unions will naturally fight such a move, since they depend on subscriptions to retain their own 'high life'. The NHS staff, or indeed the Unions, do not own the Service, it is owned by taxpayer GB. Unfortunately the structure leaves the system open to abuse. Why is the diminishing, hardworking and responsible section of the electorate paying for abortions of convenience, drunks and drug users? All of these should be paid for by the individuals involved, with a high premium. Let us not forget the billions incurred by mass immigration, many bringing serious disease to these shores and getting the benefit of treatment to which they have made no subscription.
Education is becoming a disgrace, with the nation lagging badly. The proof lies in the fact that we struggle to produce graduates with exceptional talent. The extraordinary fact remains that the real entrepreneurs never saw the inside of a university; this has to speak volumes. Plus the fact that so few people use proper English. It may be that electronic gadgets are more influential than correct teaching.
Can we improve in the workplace? Of course we can; we will however have to look seriously at the farcical paternity/maternity laws. Working is a full time thing not something we do between having children. People should work as many hours as they wish. The minimum wage is ridiculous; Government cannot possibly insist on what an employer pays the staff. The principle smells of the failing Euro; one size will never fit all requirements.
Broadcasting is an area where we should consider a serious overhaul. The BBC continues to act as the flag bearer of the left, whilst happy to extort money from the hard working, far from left wing section of the electorate. Supporting the large faction of society who prefer to live off the backs of people putting themselves about. This is a different institution from the days of my youth, when they were the very essence of all things reasonable. This is, unfortunately, the result when employing graduates of limited thought, direct from university, with no experience of the real world.
We have mentioned previously:
(i) The Niall Ferguson TV series, Civilization: Is the West History? this gave some pointers to the demise of the Western World, but was not critical enough.
(ii) The Watchman's Rattle, a book by Rebecca Costa. Although I have only read the first chapter so far, it is obvious that this is a book with salient points to make. The subject is about civilizations that perished by pursuing the wrong course in the need for survival. This is the situation in which we now find ourselves in the West. We have priced ourselves out of the market place; so as a pastime we are throwing money at environmental concerns and diversity. Both of these will cost us dearly with money we don't possess and will prove to be the Achilles heel in our endeavour to recover any position in the world. Much of this is driven by socialist dogma, something that has replaced common sense; mainly emanating from the Kremlinesque regime in Brussels.
In Britain we also have this strange obsession of wanting to build on 'greenbelt' land to satisfy the need for our gross over population. Presumably, the same folk who object to flying in our food from all around the world, press for our own agricultural land to become new townships, which calls for more waste tips, sewage works, reservoirs and roadways.
NONE OF THESE PROBLEMS WILL CORRECT THEMSELVES AUTOMATICALLY.
