ARE WE COPING?

The writer is currently following Niall Ferguson's television series, Civilization: Is The West History? After the first five episodes, in my opinion, he is only scratching around. Whereas in a book by Rebecca D. Costa, The Watchman's Rattle: Thinking Our Way Out Of Extinction, Costa is a biologist who has strong opinions on the evolution of the human being. It appears that Darwin was suspicious of the human ability to cope with rapid progress.

It has been suggested in these columns many times, that we are developing gimmickry, which can make us go bust faster than making a profit. This technology is also produced with children in mind, who then proceed to spend mind numbing hours on each new toy before the next one comes along. Very little about this activity is educational.

Having dumbed down education of the younger generation, it then becomes easier for government to blind them with global warming drivel; wind turbines, non-nuclear options and the like. Remember that many of these characters are living on benefits, expecting the Chinese to produce everything they require, obviously paid for by taxpayer GB.

When we are forced back to using some good old fashioned physical effort, based upon instinct, rather than relying on promises of some kind of Utopia, we shall all benefit.

WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR?
